NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge softball team (9-8) earned a split at the opening day of The Worth Invitational, defeating Rutgers, 2-0, after falling earlier to the Scarlet Knights, 6-1. Debbie Duran picked up her seventh win of the season for Northridge in the second game and Tracy Allen scored her team-leading 12th run of the season in the win.
Duran actually started both games against Rutgers Friday, as she also picked up the loss in the first contest. For the day, she 9.2 innings, allowing eight hits and only one earned run. She now stands at 7-5 on the season with a 1.93 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 61.2 innings of work.
At the plate, Christina Saenz continued to befuddle pitchers, picking up four hits, including her third double of the season, and scoring a run over the course of the day. She is now hitting a team-high .477 with nine runs scored and 21 hits.
Allen finished the day with three hits at the plate to raise her season average to .368 and Micah Putnam laid down her team-leading fifth sacrifice bunt of the season and recorded her fifth stolen base of the season. Jaci Carlsen added a double, her second of the year.
Game 1 Recap
Rutgers claimed a 6-1 victory in the first game of a schedule doubleheader against Northridge Friday at The Worth Invitational. The Scarlet Knights chased CSUN starter Debbie Duran in the third inning when they scored all six of their runs.
The top of the third started with Rutgers connecting on a pair of singles. After a strikeout looking, a Rutger batter reached on a single to load the bases. The next batter hit a sharp grounder to third base, which Tracy Allen fired to the plate. However, Krystal Raphael could not control the throw and the first run scored. Rutgers would string together several more hits over the inning to bring in six in the frame.
Hannah Fraijo came into relieve Duran during the third and pitched the rest of the game, allowing four hits of 4.1 innings of work while fanning four batters. Duran's line read 2.2 innings of work with six hits, six runs, though only one of which was earned and two strikeouts.
Northridge got a run across in the fifth inning when Lauren Olivas picked up her first RBI of the season on a groundout, bringing home Jaci Carlsen. Rutgers' Nicole Lindley picked up the victory, tossing a complete game while scattering seven hits and striking out one.
Game 2 Recap
The Matadors rebounded in game two of their doubleheader with Rutgers, finishing with a 2-0 victory. Debbie Duran tossed a complete game in the win, allowing only two hits and facing just one batter over the minimum. Duran was sharp throughout the contest, striking out four batters and walking only one Rutgers hitter.
Saenz rocketed a double to centerfield and later came around to score on a Sac Fly by Hannah Fraijo, the freshman's fifth RBI of the season. The second Northridge came courtesey of a Rutgers error. After Micah Putnnam reached base, she broke for second base with Allen standing at third. When Rutgers threw the ball down to try and catch her stealing, the shortstop dropped the throw, allowing Allen to score.
Northridge resumes its hosting responsibilities at The Worth Invitational Saturday, playing Portland State (9 a.m.) and Quinnipiac (11 a.m.). Following the two CSUN games, Rutgers will play both Quinnipiac (1 p.m.) and Portland State (3:30 p.m.).
