LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (1-9) fell 12-6 to Portland State Sunday morning at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament. Despite an early PSU lead that ballooned to as much as 12-1, CSUN fought until the final out before losing their seventh straight.

Portland State wasted little time flexing their offensive muscle. The first two Vikings reached safely to star the game, resulting in a 1-0 lead. Then with the bases loaded, PSU cashed in with a three-run double to chase Northridge starter Mia Pagano.

The Matadors would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the first, scoring on a Viking error. However, Amanda Pitzenberger struck out with the bases loaded to end the threat.

The Vikings then responded with three two-out, unearned runs in the top of the second to stretch their lead to 7-1.

PSU continued to sting the ball in the top of the fifth. The first four Vikings reached safely, PSU scored five more times and increased its lead to 12-1.

Northridge answered in the bottom of the fifth. Lauren Olivas led off the inning with a double, then came around to score on an RBI double by Kristen Mihm. After Alexandria Alvarado was hit by a pitch, Jaci Carlsen delivered a pinch-hit single to score Mihm.

Christina Saenz then laced a two-run double into left-center to avert the mercy rule. CSUN ended the inning with four hits and four runs.

After Debbie Duran retired the PSU sixth in order, Olivas blasted her first career home run into the right field stands with one out in the bottom of the inning.

In the seventh inning, a Jennifer Mosier single was all CSUN could muster.

Northridge returns to the diamond Wednesday for a road trip to San Diego State. First pitch between the Matadors and Aztecs is slated for 6 p.m.

Following the trip, Northridge hosts Michigan State for its 2010 home opener. The Matadors and Spartans will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 27 starting at noon and a single game the following day.
