NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge softball team (4-6) defeated Samford, 8-3, Saturday in its final game at the UTEP Softball Invitational. Christina Saenz and Tracy Allen each had three hits for the Matadors while Debbie Duran tossed a complete game to give CSUN a 3-2 record at the tournament.
In addition to her three hits, Saenz drove in three runs, two of which came on a home run in the top of the seventh inning. Allen scored three runs for the Matadors and also stole a base. Saenz hit .583 over the weekend with seven RBIs to raise her season average to .455 with six runs and 10 RBIs. For Allen, her .500 average in El Paso raised her season rate to .450 and she has scored seven runs and is tied for the team lead with four stolen bases.
Both Hannah Fraijo and Micah Putnam added two RBIs for Northridge and Jaclyn Rymer scored twice and added one of Northridge's four stolen bases in the game. Fraijo is batting .167, but already has four RBIs in her rookie season. Rymer leads the team with eight runs and is hitting .304 with five RBIs and Putnam also has four stolen bases and five runs and RBIs.
Duran allowed seven hits and two earned runs in her seven innings of work. She fanned three batters, but walked seven. She is now 4-3 with a 3.28 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 36.1 innings of work.
Northridge scored a pair of runs in the first inning to set an early tone. Jaclyn Rymer drew a walk to lead off the game and immediately stole second. Getting the extra base would prove useful as Tracy Allen singled down the right field line to drive in Rymer.
In the third, Rymer again got the inning started, this time reaching on a single. Allen then collected her second single of the game and each moved up a base after Christina Saenz drew a walk.
With two outs, Micah Putnam delivered a two-run single up the middle. She then stole the Matadors' third base of the inning before Samford could record the third out.
The Bulldogs mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the third, eventually loading the bases. However, Debbie Duran got Amanda Barrs to fly out to Saenz in right to end the threat.
The Matadors increased their lead to 6-0 following a two-run fourth. Kristen Mihm led off the inning with a single and Karla Chaparro came into pinch-run for her. Chaparro then stole second and moved to third on a groundout. However, Chaparro would be throw out at the plate on a bunt single by Tracy Allen.
With Allen on first, Alexandria Alvarado drew a walk and Saenz blasted a single to left-center to score Allen and move her and Alvarado into scoring position. Hannah Fraijo then picked up her second RBI of the game with an RBI single to left field.
Samford got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Aaren Fisher hit a two-run home run with one out.
The Matadors answered right back with a home run of their own, as Saenz blasted a two-run shot to center field to increase the Matadors' lead to 8-2. It was her seventh career home run and first of the season.
Upon their return from West Texas, the Matadors head south on the Interstate 405 to compete in Mayfair Tournament hosted by Long Beach State.
