Elder, CSUN Remain Sharp in Victory over Harvard

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---

Junior Brianna Elder picked up her 13th win and 11th complete game of the season as the Cal State Northridge softball team (18-9) defeated Harvard 4-1 Thursday afternoon at Matador Diamond. At the plate, Taylor Glover belted her fourth triple of the season, three other Matadors recorded RBIs and the Matadors improved to 9-1 at home this season.

Aside from a two-out solo home run in the top of the fourth, Elder (13-3) continued to impress. She scattered four hits and finished with three strikeouts and no walks. The Big West Pitcher of the Week, Elder now owns a 1.97 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 96 innings of work.

At the plate, Glover smashed her team-leading fourth triple of the season to drive home Abby Linn in the top of the first. She then came around to score on an RBI sac fly from freshman Katie Hooper.

Glover, the Big West Player of the Week, leads the club with a .419 batting average and 21 runs on the season. She and Hooper are tied for the team lead with 20 RBIs.

After the Crimson closed to within a run, CSUN struck for two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Nate singled to right and scored on Maylynn Mitchell's ground-rule double. Carissa Sherman then plated Mitchell with an RBI single to right field.

Sherman finished the game with a career-high two hits. Mitchell also had two hits and Linn recorded her fifth stolen base of the season. The Matadors are now 12-1 over their last 13 and have four games remaining this weekend at Matador Diamond.

On Friday, Mar. 21, the Matadors will face the Bakersfield Roadrunners at 2 p.m. On Saturday, CSUN faces its former Big West rival in the Pacific Tigers also at 2 p.m. Finally, on Sunday, Mar. 23, the Matadors play Pacific at 11:30 a.m. followed by Bakersfield at 2 p.m.
