NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northtirdge softball team (17-9) defeated LMU 9-1 (five innings) and 7-5 in a non-conference doubleheader at Loyola Marymount Saturday afternoon. The Matadors brought their offense to the diamond Saturday, clubbing 23 hits in the two victories to give them wins in 11 of their last 12 games.
The Matadors are certainly rolling right now and Saturday was another example of that stellar play. Brianna Elder and Daphne Pofek picked up wins in the circle and Elder recorded her third save of the year as well.
Game One Recap
CSUN pounded out 11 hits and LMU committed five errors in the field as the Matadors posted their second run-rule victory of 2014.
Brianna Elder (12-3) allowed just three hits and two walks in her five innings of work. She had four strikeouts in the win and has lowered her season ERA to 2.04 in 89 innings this season.
CSUN jumped out with an unearned run in the first as Abby Linn came around to score on an error by the Lions' catcher. In the second inning, CSUN added three runs. Nate scored on an RBI single by Maylynn Mitchell, who later came around to score on an RBI single by Linn. She and Carissa Sherman both scored on two-run single by Glover.
The Matadors scored three more times in the fourth to conclude their scoring in the first game. Ricks singled up the middle to plate Kaitlin Toerner and Nate added a two-run single that scored Ricks and Leann Lopez.
Game Two Recap
The Matadors continued to pound the ball on offense, slugging 12 hits to overcome four errors in the field. Glover finished 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and her third triple of the season. Katie Hooper and Nate each collected doubles in the win.
CSUN struck for three runs in the first inning. Hooper reached on a fielder's choice that scored Linn and Pofek helped her cause with an RBI groundout. The third run came on a Nate RBI double that scored Glover.
The Matadors added a run in the second, third and fourth innings. In the second, Glover delivered a two-out RBI single to score Toerner. In the third, Madison Fleming collected an RBI single to score Nate. Finally, Glover picked up another RBI with a groundout to score Toerner again.
Leading 6-5 in the top of the sixth, CSUN added an insurance run. Glover blasted a two-out triple and then scored on a double from Hooper. For the season, Hooper has a team-high five doubles and is tied with Glover for the team lead with 19 RBIs.
Pofek earned the win for CSUN to even her season record at 3-3. She worked around eight hits and a walk to earn the win. Jordan Sauceda tossed three important innings of hitless relief work and Elder recorded the final two outs to close out the victory.
CSUN returns to action on Thursday, Mar. 20 with a home game against Harvard. First pitch from Matador Diamond is slated for 2:30 p.m.
