CSUN Softball Defeats Grand Canyon to Open Weekend Slate

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---

A pair of runs in the first inning was all the Cal State Northridge softball team (10-8) needed to defeat Grand Canyon 2-0 in a non-conference game at Matador Diamond. Junior Brianna Elder tossed her second career shutout, striking out six and allowing just four hits as the Matadors opened their five-game weekend with a victory over the Antelopes.

After a quick top of the first, Abby Linn started the bottom of the frame by legging out an infield single. Freshman Taylor Glover then belted her first career triple into right-center to bring Linn all the way around to score. Fellow rookie Katie Hooper then drove home Glover with a sacrifice fly to center. Hooper leads the team with 14 RBIs while Glover is second with 11 on the year.

That was all Elder (8-3) needed to pick up her eighth win of the season. Grand Canyon threatened with runners in the scoring position in the second before Elder fanned the final out of the frame. She also got some solid defense behind her and Sydney House caught a runner stealing to end the top of the fourth.

Madalyne Handy and Kaitlin Toerner also had base hits for CSUN.

Northridge returns to action Saturday with contests against Georgetown (9 a.m.) and Grand Canyon (3 p.m.). Sunday's schedule has CSUN facing Oregon State (noon) and Charleston Southern (3 p.m.). All games are at Matador Diamond.
