CSUN Softball Falls Twice Saturday at Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---

The Cal State Northridge softball team (6-7) lost 12-0 to No. 12 Texas A&M and 5-2 to Long Island-Brooklyn Saturday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. CSUN closes outs its time in the tournament Sunday with games against Oklahoma State and UNLV.

Texas A&M Recap

The 12th-ranked Aggies overpowered the Matadors and took a 12-0, five-inning victory. Facing its third ranked opponent of the season, CSUN could not slow down Texas A&M. The Aggies jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three full innings and added three more in the fourth.

Brianna Elder (5-3) took the loss for CSUN, going two innings with five hits, six earned runs and three walks. Crystal Maas and Daphne Pofek also saw time in the circle for CSUN.

Offensively, four different Matadors recorded base hits in defeat.

Long Island Recap

The Matadors were tied 2-2 with the Blackbirds through six innings, but LIU scored three times in the top of the seventh to claim the victory.

Trailing 2-0 in the third, CSUN scored twice to even the contest. Taylor Nate blasted her second home run of the season to start the frame. Abby Linn then tripled down the line, her second three-bagger of the season, and came around to score on a wild pitch.

The teams remained tied until the top of the seventh. Long Island then strung together three runs on four base hits to seal the victory. In their half of the seventh, Madalyne Handy and Nate reached base safely to start the inning, but they would be stranded when the game ended.

Pofek (0-2) took the loss for CSUN, allowing three earned runs and six hits in 4.1 innings of work. Jordan Sauceda started the game for the Matadors, lasting 2.2 innings with four hits and two earned runs.

CSUN closes out its time at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Sunday against Oklahoma State and UNLV.
