CSUN Battles with No. 4 Arizona State, San Jose State on Opening Day

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---

The Cal State Northridge softball team (0-2) lost 6-1 to No. 4 Arizona State in its second game on opening day at the Kajikawa Classic. Freshman Arianna Wassmer had two hits and an RBI and sophomore Jennifer Tyler tossed several impressive innings but the Matadors could not overcome a couple Sun Devil home runs.

Wassmer, who doubled earlier in the day against San Jose State, had two singles and drove home the Matadors' run in the sixth inning. Mikayla Thielges walked twice and scored the run and Korinne Randazzo added two singles as well.

In relief against one of the top teams and offenses in the nation, Jennifer Tyler allowed one hit and one run over the final 4.1 innings. She struck out two and walked three in her pitching debut for the Matadors.

Arizona State forced Tyler's entry into the game after scoring five runs and clubbing two home runs in the third inning of CSUN starter Mia Pagano (0-1).

CSUN Rally Falls Just Short in 6-5 Loss to San Jose State

The Cal State Northridge softball team (0-1) lost 6-5 to San Jose State in its season opener Friday morning at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Down 6-2 heading to the seventh, senior Mikayla Thielges blasted a solo home run and sophomore Sydney House added a two-run single, but the Matadors fell just short in pushing the tying run across the plate.

Thielges blasted her 20th career home run to left center to start a one-out Northridge rally in the top of the seventh. That ties her with  Jaci Carlsen and Shannon Jones for seventh in school history.

After Thielges' deep fly, the rally continued as Jennifer Tyler drew her second walk of the game and then moved to third on a double by Mia Pagano. House then delivered a two-run single to left that brought CSUN within one run.

With Crystal Maas pinch running for House, Abby Linn laced her first career double down the left field line. However, Maas got caught in a rundown between third and home and was tagged out for the second in the inning. The next CSUN batter fouled out and the rally came up just one run short.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on CSUN starter Shelly Tait. The Matadors responded by tying the game at 1-1 as Linn made it all the way to third on a SJSU error. She then scored on an groundball from Leann Lopez.

SJSU then tagged Tait for three runs in the top of the third and chase her from the circle. Northridge added a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout by Korinne Randazzo.

Pagano replaced Tait in the circle and gave up a run in both the fourth and the sixth. Tait (0-1) took the loss after allowing seven hits, four runs with two strikeouts in three innings. Pagano gave up five hits and two runs in her three innings of work.

The Matadors return to action Saturday, Feb. 9 with games against Florida and California.
