NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge softball team (9-34, 4-8 Big West) lost 9-4 to Long Beach State Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Matador Diamond. Madeline Sale extended her hitting streak to a team-best nine games with a two-run ground-rule double, but Northridge could not solve the 49ers' Erin Jones-Wesley.
Entering the game after Sale's blast cleared the left-field wall in the second, Jones-Wesley did not give up a hit and struck out four batters over the final 5.2 innings. She replaced Taylor Petty, who gave up four unearned runs in the Matador second.
With one out, Long Beach State had a throwing error at second base that put runners on the corners. Jessica Fridwall drew a walk to load the bases and Leann Lopez delivered a sac fly to score Alyssa Ray. That brought up Tiffini Lucero, who dropped a single into left field to score Sydney House and she eventually moved to second during the play.
Sale launched a 2-1 pitch to left that short-hopped the fence to score Fridwall and Lucero and tie the game. Sale now has five doubles and nine RBIs on the season.
The teams were still deadlocked until the fifth when Long Beach collected a two-run home run off Elder (1-5). The 49ers then added three more in the sixth off Alexa Limon.
CSUN returns to action on Saturday, April 28 with a doubleheader against Cal State Fullerton. The Matadors and Titans will then plan a single game on Sunday, April 29 with both days slated for a noon start at Matador Diamond.
