SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. ---
The Cal State Northridge softball team (8-29, 3-4 Big West) defeated Cal Poly 4-0 in a Big West Conference game Saturday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field. Mia Pagano tossed a two-hit shutout and added her first career home run, a grand slam, to lead the Matadors to the victory and snap a five-game losing streak.
Pagano was on her game from the start on a windy Saturday afternoon. After allowing a lead-off single in the first, the Mustangs recorded just one more hit for the rest of the game. She added three strikeouts and did not walk a batter in tossing her 13th complete game and second shutout of the season.
In the top of the third, CSUN loaded the bases with nobody out. After a popout, Mia Pagano came to the plate and helped her own cause. On a 1-0 pitch, Pagano drilled her first career home run, a grand slam, to give CSUN the early 4-0 lead. It marked the second-straight game Pagano drove in four runs, both of which were new career highs.
Samantha Sloniker had two hits for the Matadors and three other Northridge players also recorded a base hit on the day.
Jordan Yates allowed six hits, four earned runs and two walks to take the loss for Cal Poly.
Northridge and Cal Poly will play a doubleheader on Sunday, April 15 with the first pitch of game one slated for noon. On Wednesday, April 18 CSUN heads to No. 16 UCLA for a single game at 2 p.m.
Following the contest with the Bruins, Northridge opens a six-game Big West homestand. On April 21-22, the Matadors face Long Beach State. On April 28-29, the Matadors host Cal State Fullerton. All six games will be played at Matador Diamond and all four days of action are slated to begin at noon.
