NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge softball team (7-26, 2-3 Big West) lost twice to UC Davis in a Big West Conference doubleheader at Matador Diamond. The Aggies' tandem of Justine Vela and Jessica Thweatt each had 10 strikeouts as the Matador bats could not generate a run in two eight-inning defeats (1-0, 2-0).
Vela entered the weekend as the league leader in strikeouts and fanned 10 batters in the opener. THe Aggies scored the only run of the game on an RBI triple in the top of the eighth inning.
CSUN managed four hits and drew five walks but could never get a runner across the plate. In the sixth, the Matadors loaded the bases with no outs only to see the next three batters retire harmlessly.
Mia Pagano (6-12) gave Northridge a valiant effort in the circle. She allowed only four hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out four. In tossing the complete game, she lowered her ERA to 3.68 for the season.
Game two went much the same as game one, with neither team generating much offense. CSUN threatened in the seventh, putting the winning run on third. However, nothing came of it and the Aggies scored a pair of runs on a infield single with the bases loaded in the eighth.
Again, the Matadors got a solid start in the circle, this one coming from Brianna Elder (1-3). The redshirt freshman tossed eight innings and had six strikeouts, both of which set new season highs.
However, the Matadors were held at bay by Thweatt. Along with the 10 stikeouts, she had three walks and two hit batters to go with three CSUN hits.
CSUN will hope to salvage the series Saturday, April 7 when the two teams play a single game at noon. On Easter Sunday, Northridge hosts New Mexico in a doubleheader slated for an 11 a.m. start.
