Nancy Avesyan Earns Big West Women's Soccer Co-Player of the Week

Oct. 20, 2008

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge women's soccer freshman Nancy Avesyan earned Big West Co-Player of the Week honors after scoring the game-winning goals in the Matador's 2-0 victory over UC Davis and 2-1 win over Pacific this past weekend. For the season, Avesyan leads the team with 11 points, the result of four goals and three assists.

In helping CSUN to a weekend sweep of its league matches, the first by a Matador team since 2004, Avesyan connected on a pair of second-half goals to propel Northridge to the victories.

"It feels great to win this award," Avesyan said. "The team played very hard this weekend in picking up these two victories. We continue to work hard for each other and it is always inspiring to see how hard everyone works."

Against UC Davis, she scored following a cross from teammate Kristal Phillips. After the ball deflected off another Matador, sophomore Erin Kelly, Avesyan deposited the ball into the net in the 57th minute to give Northridge a 1-0 lead in what turned out to be a 2-0 victory.

Two days later, Avesyan saved the heroics until the waning moments of the match, collecting a loose ball following a corner kick from Phillips and driving a low, line-drive shot past the Pacific keeper in the 88th minute of action.

In addition to leading the team with 11 points, her 29 total shots and 14 shots on goal both lead the Matadors. Her four goals are tied with teammate Farryn Townley for the team lead and her three assists are tied for second behind Phillips' five.

"I just want to keep working hard for myself and teammates," Avesyan stated. "It is great to come in and contribute as a freshman and I know that as long as we continue to work towards our goals, bigger and better things will come."

UC Santa Barbara's Genelle Ives shared the conference honors with Avesyan after scoring a pair of goals in the Gauchos' 4-2 win over Cal Poly. She also had UCSB's goal in its 1-1 tie with Pacific.

Avesyan and the Matadors return to the pitch Thursday when they travel to UC Irvine for a pivotal Big West Conference match. Kick off between the Anteaters and Northridge is slated for 7 p.m. at Anteater Stadium.
