Cynthia Jacobo Named Big West Defensive Player of the Week
Oct. 4, 2010
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Following an undefeated week that included two shutouts, Cal State Northridge sophomore goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo was named Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Jacobo helped lead the Matadors to a 1-0 win over San Diego, a 2-1 result against UC Davis and a 1-0 shutout over Pacific.
"It feels great to win this award and this past week's results were what we wanted and gets us out to a great start in Big West play," Jacobo said. "The six points puts us in a good position for the rest of the league schedule and we're looking forward to playing two more quality teams this weekend."
Jacobo started the week by doing something no previous Matador goaltender had accomplished in the program's history: record a victory over San Diego. She made five saves in the win, CSUN's first in seven all-time meetings with the Toreros.
On Oct. 1, Jacobo added another five saves to help lead Northridge to a 2-1 win over the Aggies in both team's Big West opener. Two days later, Jacobo recorded two saves in a 1-0 shutout victory over Pacific.
The three wins moved her into third in school history with 12 career victories and the two shutouts gave her nine career clean sheets, also the third-most in the program's history. For the season, Jacobo is 7-5 with a 1.27 goals-against-average, 57 saves and a .792 save percentage.
Her position coach, Juan Plascencia, listed an improved work effort and Jacobo's humility as reasons for her success.
"She is working harder and getting pushed every day in practice so it's only natural that she's getting better each week," Plascencia said. "The wins and the shutouts are a byproduct of how hard she works for the team."
The recognition marks the second time this season that Jacobo has received the league's Defensive Player of the Week honors. She also earned the honor on Sept. 13 after leading the Matadors to 1-0 shutouts over Kansas and UNLV in Las Vegas.
Last season, Jacobo earned Big West Freshman of the Year honors after starting her career with five-straight shutouts against league opponents. She also was named to the All-Big West Second Team in 2009.
Jacobo and the Matadors return to action this weekend with a pair of Big West road contests. First up is an Oct. 8 match at UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. Two days later, CSUN faces Cal Poly at 1 p.m.
