Under third-year head coach Keith West, the 2008 Cal State Northridge women's soccer team has been picked to finish seventh in the Big West Conference by the league's coaches, the Big West Conference announced Tuesday. The Matadors received 30 points in the poll and will open their 2008 season against San Diego State on Aug. 22 at 4:30 p.m.

Led by senior captains Nalena Betancourt and Tryna Tafoya, the 2008 Matadors will be bolstered by a defensive backline that returns three players who appeared in all 18 matches during the 2007 season. Tafoya enters the season with nine career assists, tied for the sixth-most in school history.

The Matadors will look for offense from a mixture of veterans and incoming talent. Junior Adrienne Dickerson and sophomore Farryn Townley will both be counted upon to find the back of the net and Senior Kristal Phillips returns to the squad after missing last season. She had six goals, four assists and 16 points in 2006.

UC Santa Barbara earned first place in the poll, receiving 74 points and four first-place votes. Long Beach State was picked second with 73 points and three first-place votes. Cal Poly was the third team to receive first-place votes, getting two along with its 62 points for a predicted third-place finish.

Northridge finished the 2007 season with a 5-10-3 overall record and a 2-4-2 mark in the Big West Conference. However, the team closed the season on a 3-1-2 tear in its last six games. Included in the streak was a 1-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara, the program's first victory over the Gauchos in six years.
