Aug. 6, 2008

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - With the fall season quickly approaching, the Cal State Northridge women's soccer team opened its 2008 season with its first practice of the year Wednesday, August 6. The Matadors return 14 letterwinners from a 2007 squad that finished 3-1-2 over its last six games.

"We are extremely excited about the new year," said head coach Keith West. "Our first practice went great and the girls are doing well."

Seniors Nalena Betancourt and Tryna Tafoya will serve as team captains for the 2008 campaign as the Matadors open the season with a home contest against San Diego State on Aug. 22 at 4:30 p.m.

On Aug. 29, the women's team is the opening act in a back-to-school tripleheader that will also feature two men's soccer games, including the Northridge men's season opener against Georgetown.

The festivities at Matador Soccer Field start at 11:30 a.m. with the women's team facing Southern Utah, followed by a match between Cal State Fullerton and Alabama A&M and concluding with the Matadors-Hoyas contest.

Cal State Northridge students receive free admission to all the men's and women's 2008 home soccer matches with their CSUN student I.D. Adult tickets are $5 and youth tickets for those 17 and younger are $3. CSUN faculty and staff are also admitted to the games for $3 and groups of 10 or more can get tickets for just $1 each.

Just before the start of practice, the team also engaged in some team-building exercises with the Cal State Northridge Associated Students Recreation Department. On Aug. 5, the Matadors were put through a series of challenges aimed to test their abilities to cooperate and achieve a singular goal.
