NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team has added seven new members to the squad for the 2009 season, Head Coach Keith West announced. Stephanie Galarze, Melissa Fernandez, Chloe McDaniel, Cynthia Jacobo, Megan Zahnow, Desiree Cardenas and Haley Chee bring outstanding skill, experience and depth to the Matadors.

"I am very excited about this incoming class and the capabilities it has to provide an immediate impact on our program." West said. "These girls bring a lot of great experience and talent to our squad and will make us a deeper and faster team as we move toward the start of the 2009 season."

Zahnow and Cardenas arrive at Northridge with some experience at the collegiate level. Zahnow played at Southeastern Louisiana during the 2008 season, scoring two goals, including one game winner, in 10 apperances for the Lions. Originally from Simi Valley, Zahnow played her high school soccer at Royal HS and scored 18 goals during the 2008 season.

Cardenas comes to CSUN after helping Cerritos JC to back-to-back state championships. She showed a knack for scoring in her two seasons with the Falcons, amassing 12 goals, 19 assists and 43 points. She was a 2nd Team All-Far West selection as well as being named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year un 2008.

"I believe both Desiree and Megan will be able to step in contribute immediately," West said. "They both bring tremendous athleticism and valuable experience to the squad."

Galarze and McDaniel come to CSUN after being teammates at Quartz Hill HS. Galarze was an All-CIF SS Division II First Team selection in 2009, scoring 36 goals, 17 assists and 89 points during the year, including a seven-goal game against Antelope Valley on Jan. 15.

McDaniel had seven goals and seven assists for the Rebels during the 2008-09 season, earning LA Daily News All-Area Honorable Mention honors. She is expected to see time along the defensive backline for the Matadors.

"Stephanie and Chloe both bring an explosive athletic element to our squad." West added. "Chloe has great size and a winning mentality and Stephanie has the ability to change the game with every touch."

Another pair of teammates, Fernandez and Jacobo, will also suit up for CSUN in 2009 after finishing their high school work at Granada Hills. Fernandez had 14 goals, three assists and 31 points during the 2008-09 season, earning LA Daily News All-Area Second Team honors.

A goalkeeper, Jacobo registered 12 shutouts for the Highlanders during the 2008-09 campaign, including seven-straight clean sheets to conclude the season. She also earned LA Daily News All-Area Honorable Mention accolades.

"Melissa is a tremendous athlete who should step in and contribute on the pitch immediately," West said. "Cynthia is an athletic goalkeeper who should challenge this summer for a spot in net."

Chee is the only incoming Matador without ties to California, playing her high school soccer for Kalani in Honolulu. She earned Honolulu Advertiser All-State Honorable Mention accolades following her work in the 2008-09 season.

"Haley is quick and tough. I fully expect her to come in and challenge for playing time from the moment she steps on campus," West concluded.

West and the Matadors will announce their full 2009 schedule shortly. In Big West play, Northridge hosts Long Beach State, Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine. The Matadors will play league matches at UC Riverside, UC Davis, Pacific and Cal State Fullerton.
