NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Alexandria Ngo's goal with 38 seconds left broke a scoreless tie and gave Cal State Bakersfield (5-9-2) a 1-0 victory over Cal State Northridge (8-9) Friday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. Freshman Cynthia Jacobo extended her shutout streak to 324:17 with four saves in the first 45 minutes of action.
With the score knotted at 0-0 entering the 90th minute, Ngo took a pass from Daisy Vazquez at the CSUN 18 and drove a shot past Northridge goalkeeper Leah Elliott;s right to give the Roadrunners the victory. Ngo had received a yellow card in the 81st minute.
For Northridge, the game was a break in Big West action and the Matadors had several players make their official debuts on the pitch. Ileana Galindo, Cristina Martinez and Jocelyn Coney all made their debuts for head coach Keith West and Northridge.
In all, CSUB out-shot the Matadors, 20-6, including 13 shots in the second half. The Roadrunners also won two corner kicks and had 15 fouls in the match.
Jacobo started the game for Northridge and played the first half before being lifted for Elliott. Jessica Montano made the start for CSUB, finishing with three saves in the victory.
The Matadors return to action Sunday with a pivotal contest against UC Irvine. In both team's only league match of the week, the Matadors and Anteaters will both be looking for points to solidify their place in the Big West Tournament.
Entering the week, CSUN stood in third place with 12 points and a 4-2 record, while UCI was 3-2-1 with 10 points, good for fourth place. Only the top four teams advance to the Big West Tournament.
Kick-off between the Matadors and Anteaters is slated for 2:30 p.m. at Matador Soccer Field.
