Matadors Post Important Road Victory over UC Riverside, 1-0
Oct. 16, 2009
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (7-8, 3-2 Big West) defeated UC Riverside, 1-0, Friday night at the UCR Soccer Stadium. Freshman Cynthia Jacobo started her second-straight match in goal for the Matadors, making six saves for her second-straight shutout.
Jacobo, who started the season as the fourth goaltender on the depth chart, has stepped into the position well over the last two contests and has yet to allow a goal. On Friday, the six saves represented a new career high and helped CSUN emerge with a crucial road win and three points in the league standings.
In the 21st minute, Northridge broke through to score the game's only goal. Following a free kick, Sydney Vermillion won a ball in the Riverside 18 and slipped a pass up the wing to Katie Fox. She then fed a cross from the right side of the goal to a streaking Farryn Townley, who smashed the ball past the Highlander goalkeeper to give CSUN a 1-0 lead.
The goal was Townley's team-leading eighth of the season, one shy of the school record for a single year, and her fourth against a league opponent. The assist was Vermillion's second of the year and Fox's first helper of the season.
The Matador defense withstood several quality chances by the Highlanders throughout the second half. On offense, Niki Connolly and Nicole Cruz had good looks at the Highlander net in the second half, but could not put the ball away. Jessica White made eight saves for UCR in the loss.
"Tonight was a great win for us and a total team effort," head coach Keith West said. "We had a lot of players out tonight and players who hadn't played a lot earlier in the year are stepping up and playing important roles."
The win helped Northridge record back-to-back shutout conference victories on the road for the first time in program history. Northridge was whistled for 12 fouls compared to 15 for UC Riverside. Two Highlanders saw the yellow card in the match.
The Matadors remain on the road for their next match, a meeting with Cal State Fullerton at Titan Stadium on Sunday at 6 p.m.
