SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (7-6, 2-1 Big West) lost 1-0 to UC Santa Barbara in a Big West contest Friday night at Harder Stadium. A goal by Kailyn Kugler in the 32nd minute stood up as the Gauchos defeated the Matadors for the 11th time in their last 12 meetings.
Playing in its first Big West match on the road, Northridge was out-shot 15-8 and surrendered eight corner kicks. It was on one of the five first-half corner kicks that Kugler scored the game's only goal, clearing a scrum in front of the net on the near post. Erin Ortega and Jacqui Simon earned assists on the play.
In net, Cynthia Jacobo did all she could to keep CSUN in the contest, making seven saves. Five of those stops came in the second and she was helped by the woodwork in the 67th minute when Kugler hit the post on an attempt.
For the season, Jacobo is 7-6 with a 1.25 goals-against-average, 64 saves and an .800 save percentage. Her counterpart, Makenna Henry, made two saves in the match to earn the shutout.
The Matadors remain on the road for their next two games, beginning with a match on Sunday, Oct. 10 at Cal Poly that starts at 1 p.m. On Friday, Oct. 15, CSUN travels to face nationally ranked UC Irvine in a match that starts at 6 p.m.
Following the match with the Anteaters, Northridge plays three of its final five matches at home, beginning with an Oct. 17 contest against UC Riverside at 6 p.m.
