NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (5-5) defeated the San Diego Toreros (5-4-2), 1-0, Monday evening in the final tune-up before the start of Big West Conference play.
Erin Kelly scored her second goal of the season in the fourth minute of play off a penalty kick. The Matadors were awarded the opportunity after Sonia Espitia was fouled inside the box, as she was driving to the goal.
Kelly took full advantage of the penalty shot by sending a perfect kick to the left and out of the reach Toreros' goalkeeper, Courtney Parsons.
Matadors goalkeeper, Cynthia Jacobo picked up her third shutout of the season, as she saved five attempts. Jacobo has now held three of the last five Matadors opponents scoreless. Her previous two saves were also 1-0 decisions, as she held Kansas and UNLV each without a goal.
The early score would be just enough for the Matador defense, as they held San Diego scoreless for the entire match, despite being outshot, 14-13. Even though San Diego finished with a 10-3 corner kick advantage, the Matadors thwarted every potential score throughout the entire match.
In the second half, the Matador offense nearly came away with a second goal on several occassions but the Toreros were able to keep CSUN off the board. Parsons had to work a little harder than her conterpart Jacobo, to keep Northridge scoreless in the second half, as the Matadors tallied six shots on goal in comparison to the Toreros who had four.
Two Matadors had multiple shots in the contest, as Marie Hirsch led the way with five followed by Kelly with four. Hirsch also had two shots on goal in the match.
The victory for CSUN is the first ever victory over the Toreros and comes a game before the Matadors will open up Big West play starting this Friday against UC Davis at Matador Field. The match with the Aggies is slated to start at 7:00pm.
