Matadors Clipped, 2-1, in Double Overtime at Arizona

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (5-3) fell to Arizona, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in Tucson, Arizona. Sophomore Farryn Townley scored her fourth goal of the season on an assist from senior Kristal Phillips, but the Wildcats responded with two goals, including the game winner, which came in the 106th minute of action.

Townley, who now leads the team with her four tallies, scored in the 33rd minute of action for the Matadors. Phillips logged an assist on the play, her third of the season and 10th of her career, moving her into a three-way tie for third in school history. She now also owns 26 career points, the eighth-most in school history.

For Arizona, London King scored in the 49th minute and the Wildcats' Renae Cuellar ended the game in the 106th minute of action.

The Matadors finished with 12 shots, six of which came on net. Freshman Nancy Avesyan led the team with four shots, two of which came on net. Phillips and freshmen Brielle Slepicoff and Nicole Cruz recorded the other shots on goal for the Matadors.

Sophomore Leah Elliott faced 18 shots from Arizona and finished the match with four saves and now holds a 5-3 record with a 1.19 goals-against-average and a .762 save percentage.

Senior Nalena Betancourt and Arizona's Sally Thurner received matching red cards in the 73rd minute and both will have to miss their respective team's next matches. CSUN was also whistled for four offsides calls during the match.

Northridge returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 28 when it hosts University of San Francisco Dons at Matador Soccer Field. Kick off is slated for 1 p.m. The Matadors are one win away from their 100th in program history.
