Matadors Drop 2-0 Decision to New Mexico

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (3-4) dropped a 2-0 decision to New Mexico Friday night at the UNM Nike Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. The Matadors must regroup quickly as they return to field Sunday to face the Kent State Golden Flashes at 10:30 a.m. (MT).

The Lobos, the host institution of the tournament, carried a 5-0 record into the match and wasted little time getting to goal. In the sixth minute, Jennifer Williams struck for her sixth goal of the season with Rachel Fields picking up an assist.

New Mexico added its second goal in the 69th minute of action as Stephanie Rowe deposited a shot off an assist by Nicole Reed.

Northridge finished the match with nine shots, though none registered on goal. Melissa Fernandez, making her CSUN debut, had two shots and Farryn Townley also finished the match with two attempts.

Junior Leah Elliott played in net for all 90 minutes for Northridge, making one save to go along with the two goals allowed. Kelli Cornell picked up the win for the Lobos in net.

The game was a physical affair, highlighted by four yellow cards. The Northridge bench and UNM's Roxie McFarland both saw the yellow card in the 41st minute. At halftime, the Northridge bench saw another yellow card and the Lobos' Jess Quador was booked in the 73rd minute.

Northridge finished with 16 fouls compared to 12 for New Mexico. CSUN did earn four corners in the contest compared to only two by the Lobos. New Mexico finished with 19 total shots in the match.

CSUN returns to action on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. (MT) with a match against Kent State. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools in women's soccer.
