NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Katie Oakes scored in the 97th minute to inch the No. 20 California Golden Bears past the Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (4-1-0) Friday afternoon in the Saint Mary's Fall Classic in Moraga, Calif. The Matadors managed two shots on goal against the nationally ranked Golden Bears, suffering their first loss of the season.
Oakes' goal came following a scrum in the box. Following a cross, CSUN keeper Leah Elliott made a save on a Cal attempt. However, the rebound came right to Oakes and she ended the game with her left foot.
The tally came after the Matador defense had frustrated the Bears throughout the contest, as Cal finished with 18 total shots, nine of which came on net. For Elliott, the eight saves represent a career high. She now stands at 4-1-0 on the season with a 0.95 goals-against average and a .733 save percentage.
Cal went into the referee's book twice during the match, as Katie Benz (26th minute) and Megan Jesolva (86th minute) each saw the yellow card.
Northridge returns to the pitch on Sunday to face host Saint Mary's. Kick off between the Matadors and the Gaels is slated for 2:30 p.m.
