NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge Matadors (2-2) were defeated by the Oregon State Beavers(2-1) 3-1 on three late second half goals by OSU Sunday afternoon at Matador Field.
Both teams played evenly throughout most of the first half until the Matadors were able to strike first, as junior Desiree Cardenas found the back of the net with a header from seven yards off a cross from senior Sydney Vermillion putting Northridge ahead 1-0 in the 37th minute.
The goal was both Cardenas' first of the season and as a Matador, as the junior transfer from Cerritos joined the team this season. Vermillon also picked up her first assist of the young 2009 season on the play.
Northridge held the lead at halftime, and throughout most of the second half, until Oregon State finally broke through with the tying goal in the 78th minute. Unfortunately for Northridge, the Beavers would score twice in the next eight minutes to increase their lead to 3-1.
The Matadors pressured the Beavers throughout the second half, as five of their eight shots were on goal. But CSUN was unable to find the back of the net for the remainder of the game, and were defeated by that same score.
Sophomore Heidi Farran had two of the seven Matador's shots on goal on Sunday.
The Matadors returned to the field on Friday, September 4th as they take on the Creighton Blue Jays in Omaha, Nebraska. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (CT)/ 5:00 p.m. (PT). Soccer fans can catch all the action on GameTracker on www.gomatadors.com.
