LONG BEACH, Calif. ---
The CSUN women's soccer team played a 90-minute exhibition with Long Beach State Saturday afternoon at George Allen Field in preparation for the upcoming 2014 season. Although the 49ers scored the contest's only goal, the Matadors produced some solid offensive chances and multiple student-athletes made their first appearance ever in a CSUN jersey.
"I thought we did excellent today. We are 10 days into camp and did a lot of good things," CSUN head coach Keith West said. "We also saw areas where we have to improve and that is why you play scrimmages like this. We got to see some freshmen out on the field and some returners also got to play for the first time."
The only goal of the match came midway through the first half. The 49ers built an attack up the right side of the field that culminated with a low strike to beat the CSUN defense.
The Matadors' best chance of the day came in the second half. CSUN lofted a free kick into the area and the ensuing action required at least one save before the ball narrowly sailed over the crossbar.
While the contest does not count officially, several CSUN redshirt and true freshmen played for the first time in their Matador uniforms.
CSUN officially opens the season on August 22 with a road match at No. 7 Michigan. Kick off from Ann Arbor is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET and 4:30 p.m. PT. Live stats will be available for the contest.
