NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
Kendra Bonsall scored the contest's only goal in the 29th minute as the Cal Poly Mustangs defeated the Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (5-8-1, 0-2-1 Big West) Thursday night in a Big West Conference match at Matador Soccer Field. CSUN's Brittanie Sakajian finished with five shots, but Northridge could not find a goal in the second half to tie the match.
On a cold night in the San Fernando Valley, CSUN had a tough time generating any offense. Although the Matadors finished with 14 shots, they were able to put just one on the frame. That came off the foot of Lyndsey Preston and was easily saved by Cal Poly's Alyssa Giannetti.
The Matadors' two best chances may have come early in the first half when Sakajian and Hannah Wissler both sent shots just over the crossbar. However, Cal Poly hit paydirt in the 29th minute when Bonsall headed home Sara Epps' cross.
In net, CSUN's Cynthia Tafoya made three saves. Both teams finished with 14 shots, although Cal Poly held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. The Matadors were whistled for 15 fouls and Taylor Hobson and Wendy Warner each saw the yellow card.
The Matadors will look to rebound Sunday, Oct. 13 with a home contest against UC Santa Barbara. Kick off is slated for 4 p.m., and the match will be followed by the CSUN men's program in a contest against Cal Poly.
