Matadors Fall 2-0 to San Diego
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
A pair of first half goals sent the San Diego Toreros to a 2-0 victory over the Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (4-6) Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. Playing for the second time this season and the sixth time since 2009, Michaela Dooley and Rachel Conners scored USD goals to snap the Matadors' three-game winning streak.
Having lost 3-1 to USD earlier in the year, CSUN hoped to even its overall record with a victory Sunday. However, the Toreros had other plans and played on the front foot from the opening whistle.
After prolonged pressure to start the contest, USD broke through in 15th minute on Dooley's sixth goal of the season. Northridge amped up its effort to try and produce an equalizer but San Diego scored against the run of play in the 41st minute to double its lead.
CSUN had some chances to break through on the scoreboard in the second half. Brittanie Sakajian had a sequence where two dangerous shots were blocked and Taylor Hobson forced a nifty save from the USD goalkeeper. For the Matadors, Sunday was the first time they had been shutout since the opening weekend of the season.
In all, Northridge finished with 18 shots to 10 for USD. Michelle Craft made four saves to earn the shutout victory while her counterpart, Cynthia Tafoya, made three stops in defeat. CSUN posted seven corner kicks to San Diego's five and both team saw a player cautioned.
CSUN will look to rebound on Friday, Sept. 27 with a home contest against LMU. Kick off between the Matadors and Lions is slated for 6 p.m.
