NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---
Brittanie Sakajian scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute of action to lift the Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (1-4) to a 2-1 overtime victory over Houston Friday night at Matador Soccer Field in a non-conference match. The Matadors forced overtime against the Cougars when Breanna McCallum scored the tying goal with one second left in regulation.
Trailing 1-0 after a Cougar goal in the 73rd minute of action, CSUN needed all 90 minutes of regulation to find a tying goal. With the clock winding down, Kourtney Kutscher sent in a shot that deflected off Taylor Hobson and landed at McCallum's feet. The freshman knocked the ball in just as the final horn sounded.
Despite a fevered protest from the Houston bench, the goal was allowed and the teams went to overtime. Video footage of the play later confirmed that it crossed the goal line with time remaining regulation.
The goal was McCallum's second in as many matches and the assists were Kutscher's and Hobson's first of the season.
With momentum clearly on their side, the Matadors won the game in the first overtime period. McCallum sent in a cross that Hannah Wissler fired towards the net. Although her shot was saved, the rebound fell to the feet of Sakajian who scored on the open net to clinch the dramatic victory.
For Sakajian, the goal was her first of the season and sixth of her career. The assists were Wissler's and McCallum's first of the season.
CSUN held a sizeable advantage in shots, out-shooting Houston 30-5 for the contest. However, the Cougars' goalkeeper, Cami Koski, kept the Matadors at bay for most of the night and finished with eight saves. Her counterpart, Cynthia Tafoya, made two saves to earn her first career victory.
With the win, the Matadors improved to 27-1-2 in games in which they score at least two goals since the start of the 2008 season.
Northridge will have little time to celebrate as the team heads to Lubbock, Texas to face Texas Tech on Sunday, Sept. 8. Kick off between the Matadors and Red Raiders is slated for 1 p.m. (CT)// 11 a.m. (PT).
