CSUN Falls 3-0 at No. 5 UCLA
LOS ANGELES, Calif. ---
Behind three first-half goals, the No. 5 UCLA Bruins defeated the Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (0-2) 3-0 Sunday evening at Drake Stadium. The Bruins scored twice in the first 15 minutes to put the Matadors away early in front of a national television audience on the Pac-12 Network.
The Bruins, ranked fifth in the nation and picked to win the Pac-12 Conference, needed three minutes to get on the board. Jenna Richmond curled in a shot past a diving Rebecca Harper to take the early advantage. That lead doubled in the 15th minute of action, when Darian Jenkins collected a cross from the left side and sent it past Harper into the netting.
Taylor Smith had the third UCLA goal of the first half, splitting the CSUN defense on a give-and-go maneuver that left Harper helpless. CSUN's best chance of the opening 45 minutes was a shot from Leandra Walker that sailed just over the crossbar.
Jovani McCaskill started the second half in goal for CSUN. She faced eight shots but did not make a save. Fellow freshman Breanna McCallum had a shot on goal late in the contest. Taylor Hobson had CSUN's third shot in the match.
The Matadors remain on the road for their next two contests. On Friday, the Matadors will travel for a match at USC starting at 3 p.m. Two days later, the Matadors travel to San Diego to face the Toreros in a 12:30 p.m. contest.
