Meeting for the second-straight season to open their respective soccer campaigns, Arizona State defeated the Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (0-1) 2-0 Friday night on the Sun Devils' campus. ASU scored goals in the 29th and 64th minute of action and repelled five CSUN attempts on goal In posting the victory.
Last season, CSUN held on for a 1-0 victory behind an early goal, its first win over a Pac-12 opponent since 1999. Friday night proved a different story, Cali Farquaharson scored off a cross from Jessica Domenichelli in the 28th minute. That lead doubled in the second half with a goal from Sarah Tosti.
Offensively, Northridge finished with eight shots and forced four saves from ASU's Chandler Morris. Fiver different Matadors had a shot on goal and Hannah Wissler and Kendall each had two shots in the contest. ASU was also credited with a team save.
Two Matadors made their first career starts Friday evening: freshman Camille Watson and junior Melissa Lopez. For Lopez, the action Friday evening was her first since the 2011 season as she missed all of last year with injury.
In net, Rebecca Harper made the first start of her career for CSUN and recorded two saves in defeat. Northridge finished with two corner kicks to ASU's four.
The Matadors continue their road tour of the Pac-12 Conference with a match at No. 3 UCLA on Sunday. The 6 p.m. match will be aired live on the Pac-12 Network with JB Long and Krista Blunk calling the action.
