CSUN Sends Seniors Off with 1-0 Victory over UC Davis

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---

The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (8-4-5, 5-1-1 Big West) defeated UC Davis Sunday afternoon in a Big West Conference match at Matador Soccer Field. Senior Melissa Fernandezscored the match's only goal in the 24th minute and fellow senior Cynthia Jacobo made four saves to set the school record for career wins.

On an overcast and humid day in the San Fernando Valley, Fernandez scored on a give-and-go with fellow senior Marisa Miller in the 24th minute. The goal was Fernandez's career-high sixth of the season and her second game-winning goal of the weekend. Miller picked up her career-high fourth assist on the play.

CSUN had chances throughout the day but the Aggie's goalkeeper, Taylor Jern, made several big saves to keep the contest close. In all, Northridge finished with 13 shots in the contest compared to nine for UC Davis.

In net, Jacobo made four stops to earn her 30th career victory and set a new school record. She made three saves in the second half to post her seventh shutout of the year and 23rd of her career. For the season, Jacobo is 8-4-5 with a 0.58 goals-against-average, 91 saves and a .901 save percentage.

Northridge held a slight edge in both corner kicks (5-3) and fouls (12-10) during the contest. Both a UC Davis player and a Northridge player saw the yellow card.

Before the match, the Matadors honored their nine senior student-athletes participating in their final home regular season match at Matador Soccer Field: Stephanie Galarze, Nicole Cruz, Haley Hawes, Katie Russ, Stephanie Norton, Jessa Yukihiro, Miller, Fernandez and Jacobo.

Next week CSUN hits the road for a pair of pivotal road contests in the race for Big West Tournament seeding. On Oct. 26, the Matadors travel to face UC Irvine in a 7 p.m. contest. Two days later (Oct. 28), Northridge squares off with Long Beach State in a 2 p.m. match.
