CSUN, Fresno State Play to 1-1 Draw

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ---

The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (2-1-1) tied Fresno State 1-1 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match at Matador Soccer Field. Melissa Fernandez scored the Matadors' goal in the 53rd minute, but Lauren Lindstrom tied things up in the 75th minute for Fresno State.

Northridge certainly had its chances on a warm Sunday in the San Fernando Valley. The Matadors finished with 35 shots in the game, putting 14 on frame. However, they could only solve the Bulldog defense and goalkeeper Katie DeVault once on the day.

After a scoreless first half, Northridge came out aggressive in the second and broke through just seven minutes after the break. Marisa Miller fed a nice pass to Brittanie Sakajian who then found Melissa Fernandez on the left side of the penalty box. She then fired in her first goal of the 2012 season and sixth of her Matador career.

The assist was the first of the season for both Miller and Sakajian. For Sakajian, the match was her first official appearance in a Matador uniform in over a year as she missed the entire 2011 campaign.

Trailing 1-0, Fresno State got decidely more offensive and the effort paid off in the 75th minute. Off a corner kick from Shonice Myers, Lauren Lindstrom found the ball after a scrum and buried it into the netting to end the day's scoring.

CSUN continued to have chances to break the deadlock, but Stephanie Galarze and Melissa Fernandez both saw several chances either sail wide or be stopped by DeVault, who finished with 12 saves in the match.

Her counterpart, Cynthia Jacobo, made five stops for CSUN. The Matadors had six corner kicks in the match to Fresno State's three and Northridge was whistled for 13 offsides calls during the course of the contest.

The draw was just the sixth for CSUN since the start of the 2009 season and the Matadors are 1-2-3 in those contests.

Northridge will look to get back to its winning ways Thursday, Aug. 30 with a match against Michigan. Kickoff between the Matadors and Wolverines is slated for 7 p.m.
