NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (4-7-2, 2-1-1 Big West) defeated UC Santa Barbara 1-0 Sunday evening at Matador Soccer Field. Junior Nicole Cruz scored her second goal of the season in the 50th minute as the Matadors snapped a five-match losing streak against the Gauchos.
Looking for a better effort than what they gave Friday in a loss to Cal Poly, the Matadors controlled the pace and action for much of the match. Northridge finished with 19 shots in the match, 14 of which came in the first half. CSUN also had five corner kicks to just two for UC Santa Barbara.
After a scoreless first half, the Matadors broke through in the opening minutes of the second for the game's only goal. Sophomore Amanda Smith made a nice run down the right flank and sent in a cross towards the goalmouth. The Gauchos' keeper got a fist to the cross, but the rebound fell to the feet of Cruz who rifled it back to the far corner.
The goal was the second of the season for Cruz and the assist was Smith's team-leading third of the season.
In net, Cynthia Jacobo made five saves to post her second shutout of the season. Her defensive front line of Stephanie Norton, Katie Russ, Chloe McDaniel and Shannon Ward also did a great job of limiting the Gauchos' offensive attempts.
The victory over the Gauchos was a long time coming for Northridge, who had defeated their coastal rivals just once since the 2001 season. CSUN also recorded its first 1-0 victory of the season after losing four times by the same result. Since 2009 the Matadors are 13-10 in a 1-0 match.
Northridge's next match up will be Friday against No. 23 Long Beach State. Kickoff between the Matadors and 49ers from Matador Soccer Field is slated for 7 p.m.
