NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's soccer team (0-3) lost 5-1 to Texas Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match in Austin, Texas. Melissa Fernandez registered the Matadors' first goal of the season, but CSUN was unable to stop the Longhorns' offense in the inaugural women's soccer game to be broadcast on ESPN's Longhorn Network.
In the Lone Star State's capital, Texas struck early and often. Taylor Knaak started the scoring in the 12th minute and the Longhorns doubled their just before halftime on a successful corner kick conversion in the 35th minute.
UT wasted little time in the second half, tacking on its third goal of the game in the 47th minute. That set up Fernandez, who answered with her second career goal just 14 seconds later. Heidi Farran and Stephanie Norton recorded assists on the play and the point was the first of Norton's career.
Texas added two more goals following Fernandez's strike and finished the game with 12 shots. For CSUN, Cynthia Jacobo made one save and took the loss after allowing four goals in 55 minutes. Haley Hawes played the final 35 minutes and allowed one goal.
Alexa Gaul had one save for the Longhorns in 70 minutes to earn the victory. Ava Vogel played the final 20 minutes for Texas and had two saves.
Northridge returns to Matador Field for their next two matches. On Sept. 2, CSUN hosts New Mexico at 7 p.m., and then squares off against Princeton on Sept. 4 at 1 p.m.
The games are sandwiched around the 2011 Cal State Northridge Labor Day Classic. The Northridge men's soccer team faces UNLV at approximately 7 p.m. after Cal State Fullerton faces defending national champion Akron at Matador Soccer Field at 4:30 p.m. Northridge will then go up against Akron on Saturday, Sept. 3 at approximately 7 p.m. after Fullerton and UNLV square off at 4:30 p.m.
