ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge, looking to defend its Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Invitational title, carded an opening round 321 and are in seventh place heading into Tuesday's final round. Individually, Kylie Kimura and Ellen Krausse are tied for 19th.
The Matadors won last season's Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Invitational with rounds of 298-293 but struggled to post a 321 on Monday. CSUN is 17 strokes behind team-leading UC Riverside which shot a team score of 304. Defending individual champion Ashlee Nagamine is not playing in the tournament this week while attending to a family matter.
Kimura and Krausse were the low Matadors as each posted an opening round (+5) 78 on the par-72 Cypress Ridge course. Kimura posted scores of 39 on the front nine as well as the back nine. Krausse posted rounds of 40-38.
The Matadors are tied with host Cal Poly at 321. UC Riverside leads with a 304 total, followed by Northern Arizona at 310 and both Fresno State and Southern Utah at 314.
UC Riverside's Amelia Ek carded a one-under-par 72 and carries a one stroke lead over Highlander teammate Denyse Neville into Tuesday's final 18 holes.
