NIPOMO, Calif. - Cal State Northridge nailed down its first tourament win of the 2009-10 season when the Matadors topped Cal Poly to win the 10-team Firestone Grill Invitational at Monarch Dunes G.C. Maurissa Medina's third place finish paced the Matadors.
Northridge and Cal Poly battled down to the wire as each team wound up the three-round tournament at 917. The Matadors, however took home the first-place team trophy by virtue of a better score by the No. 5 golfers on each team. Tammy Panich had a 78 for the Matadors and Miquela Pendleton carded an 87 for Cal Poly.
For the Matadors, Maurissa Medina continued her solid early season play as the junior finished a career-best third at (+14) 227. Medina, who finished ninth at the season-opening Bulldog and Eagle Invitational in Spokane, Wash., finished with rounds of 77-77-73 and was seven shots off the pace. Defending Big West Conference champion Stephanie Yocum of Cal Poly captured top individual honors with a seven-over-par 220 total, six strokes ahead of Mustang teammate Maddy Fletcher (226).
A pair of freshmen also stood out for Northridge as Clariss Guce tied for fourth and Margo Dionisio tied for sixth. Guce matched Medina's final round 73 and wound up with rounds of 78-77-73 to finish at (+15) 228. Dionisio, playing in her first collegiate tournament, completed rounds of 79-75-76 to finish at (+17) 230. Ashlee Nagamine also had a strong showing despite a final round 81 as she tied for 11th at (+22) 235 after rounds of 77-77-81. Panich rounded out the Matador team scoring in 36th place after rounds of 85-86-78 left her at (+36) 249.
