Matadors Improve to Final Round 315, Finish Fifth at Coast BMW College Challenge

NIPOMO, Calif. - Cal State Northridge shot a final round 315, a 19-stroke improvement over its previous best round, but finished fifth in the six-team field at the Coast BMW College Challenge at Monarch Dunes GC.

The Matadors completed team rounds of 338-334-315 to finish at 987, seven shots behind fourth-place Cal Baptist (980). UC Irvine (909) took home team champion honors with a 47-stroke victory over host Cal Poly (956). Santa Clara (962) took third and Cal State Bakersfield (1,014) finished sixth.

The Matadors were paced by senior Krystina Gillenwater's 11th-place finish while sophomore Ashlee Nagamine also finished in the top-15. Gillenwater followed up rounds of 84-80 on Monday with a final round 78 (+7) on Tuesday and finished alone in 11th-place at 242 (+29). Nagamine was a stroke back in a tie for 12th-place at 243 (+30) after a final round 79 (+8).

Freshman Lady Samson narrowly missed a top-15 finish as she posted a final round 78 (+7) to finish tied for 16th at 244 (+31). Senior Stephanie Aston finished 30th at 259 (+46) after a final round 80 (+9) and fellow senior Katrina Sutton was 31st at 260 (+47) after a final round 82. Freshman Kendall Patten, competing in her first collegiate tournament as an individual, finished tied for 27th at 256 (+43) after rounds of 89-83-84.

UC Irvine's Jane Chin was the individual winner after posting a three round 216 (+3) which was 12 shots better than Anteater teammate Joy Trotter (228, +15).
