Matadors Post 18-Shot Improvement, Move up to Fifth at Big West Championship

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. - After an opening round 318 on Sunday, Cal State Northridge moved into fifth-place with a second round 300. Sophomore Clariss Guce moved up two spots to 14th with a second round 74.

The Matadors, who were sixth after carding a team score of 318 on Sunday, improved by 18 shots on Monday and jumped one spot to fifth. Northridge is currently at 618, 17 shots behind fourth-place UC Irvine (601). Defending champion UC Davis has a firm grip on first place through two rounds as the Aggies (575) carry a 12-shot lead over Long Beach State (587) heading into Tuesday's final round. Cal Poly (595) is third, UC Riverside (619) is sixth and Cal State Fullerton (627) is seventh.

After having just two players shoot rounds in the 70's on Sunday, all five Matador golfers finished in the 70's on Monday. Guce, who's opening round 78 led CSUN, carded a two over-par 74 on Monday and sits 14th at eight over-par 152. After finishing tied for 20th at last season's conference championship, Guce is looking for a top-10 finish on Tuesday.

Senior Ashlee Nagamine made a nice charge in her final Big West Championship as she bounced back from an opening round 81 on Sunday to fire a one over-par 73 on Monday. Nagamine is tied for 16th after two rounds at (+10) 154 and is looking for her best ever conference championship finish after finishing 12th in 2009.

Lady Samson also posted her second consecutive round in the 70's with a four over-par 76 on Monday. After a (+7) 79 on Sunday, Samson is tied for 18th at (+11) 155. Margo Dionisio had the Matadors' high round of the day with a six-over 78 which followed a (+8) 80 on Sunday. Dionisio is currently in a tie for 27th at (+14) 158. Kylie Kimura, who struggled to an opening round 84 on Sunday, posted a seven-stroke improvement on Monday carding a five over-par 77. Kimura is tied for 31st at (+17) 161.

Individually, UC Davis' Alice Kim hold a commanding lead with s two-round total of (-11) 133 which leads second place Monica Villareall (67-72--139) of Long Beach State by six strokes.
