OXNARD, Calif. - Cal State Northridge matched its second round team score with a final round 328 which left the Matadors in sixth place at the Morehead State Spring Kickoff at River Ride G.C.
Northridge (980) wound up with team rounds of 324-328-328 to finish sixth in the eight-team field. Florida International, the team leader all three rounds, won easily with a team score of 895, 44 shots better than second-place Eastern Michigan (939).
"We just need to regroup and put this tournament behind us," said head coach Bonnie Murphy. "There were some bright spots for us, our ball striking was fine but we need to work on our course management."
Florida International teammates Paula Hurtado and Belen Buendia tied for individual medalist honors at (+5) 221 but Hurtado won the two-player playoff.
Sophomore Ashlee Nagamine, who was tied for fifth-place just nine shots back after two rounds, had a rough final round as she carded a 90 (+18) on Tuesday to finish tied for 20th at (+28) 244. Senior Stephanie Aston also tied for 20th after rounds of 79-82-83.
"Ashlee was tied for fifth after two rounds so for her to tie for 20th was very disappointing for her," added Murphy.
Senior Katrina Sutton also placed in the top-30 as she finished tied for 27th at (+31) 247 after rounds of 85-81-81. Also for the Matadors, junior Sarah Windsor was 34th at (+39) 255 after rounds of 84-89-82 and fellow junior Monique Huijsman finished 37th at (+41) 257 after rounds of 83-92-82.
Cal State Northridge is back on the course next week (Mar. 2-3) as the Matadors compete at the Wave Invitational held at Moorpark C.C.
