Matadors Finish Seventh in Spring Opener at The Gold Rush by Golfsmith

Feb. 15, 2011

YORBA LINDA, Calif. - Cal State Northridge carded a final round 315 on Tuesday to conclude The Gold Rush by Golfsmith women's golf tournament in seventh place at Yorba Linda Country Club. The tournament is the first of five spring tournaments for the Matadors in 2011.

The Matadors, who posted team rounds of 317-321 on Monday, closed with a 315 but could not move up from seventh place. CSUN, which finished the three-round tournament at 953, was also in seventh after the first and second rounds. San Diego State (918) won the team title by 12 strokes over host Long Beach State (926) while Portland State (942) was third. BYU (949) and New Mexico State (950) rounded out the top-five in the 12-team field.

"It's our first tournament of the spring and we're working towards putting it all together for the conference championships in April," said Matador head coach Bonnie Murphy. "We had some good moments, but we'll chalk this one up as experience and move on, I think we'll be all right."

Individually, sophomore Clariss Guce led the Matadors with a seventh-place finish, her best since finishing fourth at Cal Poly's Firestone Grill Invitational in Oct., 2009. Guce, who opened the day tied for eighth, moved into seventh place with a final round of three over-par 75. Guce had the Matadors' two lowest rounds in the tournament with an opening round 74 and a final round 75 and finished the tournament at (+13) 229.

"I'm especially proud of Clariss," said Murphy. "She really kept her composure and was very consistent with 39 pars and three birdies in 54 holes. She's been working hard on the mental side of her game and it really paid off for her in this tournament."

Sophomore Margo Dionisio carded a final round of seven over-par 79 to slip one spot to 16th at (+20) 236. She finished with rounds of 78-79-79. Dionisio's 16th-place finish is her third top-20 finish this season and the eighth of her young Matador career.

Senior Maurissa Medina had her best round of the tournament on Tuesday as she followed up identical rounds of 84 on Monday with a final round of three over-par 75. Medina moved up 20 spots from 53rd to 33rd with her final round 75.

Both Kylie Kimura and Ashlee Nagamine, who rank first on fourth on the Matadors in stroke average, struggled to identical rounds of 86 on Tuesday. Kimura, who came in with a team-best 75.2 stroke average, had carded just one round in the 80's all season but posted rounds of 81-80-86 to finish tied for 46th at (+31) 247. Nagamine, who came in averaging 77.1, posted rounds of 84-82-86 to finish tied for 54th at (+36) 252.

Cal State Northridge returns to action Feb. 28 as the Matadors compete at the Bruin Wave Invitational hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine at Robinson Ranch G.C. in Santa Clarita.
