Strong Regional Finish Sends Guce on to NCAA Championships

CLE ELUM, Wash. - After a rough start to the final round, Cal State Northridge's Clariss Guce finished strong and is one of two individuals at the NCAA West Regional to advance to the NCAA Championships.

The Matador senior finished Saturday's final round at four over-par 76 to complete the regional tied for eighth-place at five-over 221 (68-77-76). Each of the players that finished above her is on an advancing team. Denver's Tonje Daffinrud grabbed the other individual spot after finishing 12th at seven-over 223.

"This field is full of the nation's top players," said CSUN head coach Gina Umeck. "Several in this field have already competed professionally and Clariss not only kept up with the field but she surpassed many this week. Going to Nationals is a nod that you're among the the country's best and she absolutley earned it."

The final round started on the first hole for Guce and the front nine proved challenging for the second straight day. She bogeyed the second, fourth and ninth and a double bogey six on the sixth hole left Guce at 5-over at the turn.

Another double at the par-4 12th dropped Guce to seven-over for the day and eight-over for the regional when the Big West Player of the Year made a late charge. An eagle three on the par-5 14th and a birdie at No. 17 moved Guce back to four-over for the day and a par on the 18th sent her to the clubhouse at four-over for the day and five-over for the tournament.

Guce would then wait until the rest of the field completed play and ultimately the Matador senior was rewarded with a spot in the NCAA Championship, the first for a CSUN women's golfer in 10 years.
