CSUN Posts Impressive Second-Place Finish at Big West Championship

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal State Northridge completed its best showing at the Big West Championship in 10 years while senior Clariss Guce came maddeningly close to winning the conference's individual title Tuesday at San Luis Obispo Country Club.

The Matadors posted a final round 308 to hang on to second place, the best finish by a CSUN team since the 2004 team won its second consecutive title. In between, the Matadors finished finished as high as third in 2008.

"Very simply, this team played tremendously," said head coach Gina Umeck. "They played inspired golf and placing second in this competitive conference is a great success. They earned every shot and I'm absolutely proud of this team."

Guce, who carried a three-stroke lead into Tuesday's final round, was even-par through 17 holes and needed just a par at the 18th to win CSUN's first individual crown since that same 2004 season when Beth Allen won her second. But a bogey five on the 18th dropped the senior into a tie at two-under with Cal State Fullerton's Martina Edberg.

Both players returned to the 18th for a playoff where Edberg made birdie while Guce made par and the Titan freshman took home medalist honors.

Guce wound up the tournament with rounds of 74-69-74 for a three-round two-under 217 which earns the senior from Artesia her best-ever conference finish in four appearances.

Cesilie Hagen, playing in his first conference championship, was equally impressive as the transfer from Cal State Monterey Bay finished tied for third at one-over 220. Hagen, who was fifth after both round one and round two, finished with her best round of the tournament with a final round one-under 72. She posted four birdies on Tuesday and despite three bogeys stayed under par for all but one hole during the final round.

Ellen Brantberg, who was in the top-20 through two rounds, slipped into a tie for 26th at 20-over 239 following a final round 83. Brantberg wound up her first Big West Championship with scores of 80-76-83.

Sharon Shin matched her career-best finish with a 32nd-place showing as the junior matched her finish from 2012 with a total of 25-over 244 with rounds of 83-82-79. Arinda Bhanaraksa, who opened the day tied with Brantberg in 19th-place, was disqualified in the final round after signing an incorrect scorecard.

UC Davis won its first straight conference team championshp with a score of 895, 16 shots better than second-place CSUN.
