CSUN Takes Third at Santa Clara Colby Invitational
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Looking to string together three consecutive top-two finishes, the Cal State Northridge women's golf team came up five shots short as the Matadors took third at the Santa Clara Colby Invitational Tuesday at Silver Creek Valley Country Club.
Having finished second at both the Birdies for Breast Cancer tournament in Riverside and the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate over the last two weeks, CSUN was in position to finish second if not better heading into Tuesday's final round.
The Matadors trailed team-leading Boise State by just two shots after 18 holes on Monday but wound up carding a team round of 316 on Tuesday. Santa Clara, which was nine shots out of the lead after Monday's round, posted a final round 303 to overtake CSUN and Boise State to take the title in the six-team field.
Individually, Cesilie Hagen had the best finish of her young Matador career as the redshirt freshman finished third at five-over-par 149. Hagen improved on her opening round 75 by carding a final round of two-over 74 on Tuesday. Hagen wound up a single stroke behind a pair of Santa Clara golfers who tied at four-over 148.
Senior Clariss Guce also made a charge on Tuesday as she moved up from 14th to fourth with a final round one-over 73. Guce, who finished at seven-over 151, found herself in the middle of the pack after a first round 78 on Monday but rebounded for her fourth top-10 finish of the season.
Elisabeth Haavardsholm wound up with her second top-20 finish of the fall after finishing tied for 18th at (+16) 160 following rounds of 76-84. Ellen Brantberg finished in a tie for 23rd at (+19) 161 after posting rounds of 76-85 and Sharon Shin was 35th at (+32) 176 after scoring 87-89.
Bronco teammates and Annie Freeman and Sadie Strain finished 36 holes even at four-over 148 but Freeman won the playoff to claim individual medalist honors.
Cal State Northridge closes the fall schedule Oct. 28-29 when the Matadors travel to Arroyo Grande for the Cal Poly Invitational.
