Second Place Finish for Matadors and Guce at Cowgirl Intercollegiate

PALM DESERT, Calif. - A team tournament low round of 297 vaulted the Cal State Northridge women's golf team from seventh to second at the conclusion of the Wyoming Cowgirl Intercollegiate Sunday at the Classic Club/Troon Golf.

Senior Clariss Guce was also the story on Sunday as she carded a final round 70 to tie for tournament leader honors after 54 holes with Cal Poly's Taylor Yoshitake at three-under-par 213. in lieu of a playoff, Individual Medalist honors was decided on a scorecard playoff and Guce's bogey on the 15th hole made Yoshitake the playoff winner.

Guce, who has third and ninth place finishes in two previous fall tournaments, wound up carding rounds of 69-74-70 for a total of 213 her low 54-hole total this season.

"Clariss strung together a great performance, an individual win in the Golfstat rankings," said Matador head coach Gina Umeck. "Momentum is a powerful thing, and this team has created it. There's a positive feeling of being creative with challenges, and it's a true honor to be part of this program."

Three of the other four Matadors in the lineup had her best round of the tournament on Sunday. Cesilie Hagen improved on two rounds of 77 on Saturday with a final round three-over 75 to finish tied for 21st at 13-over 229.

Elisabeth Haavardsholm rounded out the CSUN scoring as she finished tied for 72nd at 243 after posting rounds of 78-79-86.

After posting a school record round of 285 earlier in the week to also finish second at UC Riverside, the Matadors posted team rounds of 306-307-297 to finish just one stroke behind Cal State Fullerton.

"To begin this day in 7th place and then vault to near-victory was a milestone for the girls today," added Umeck. "In a way, it changes everything. We now know what it feels like to contend and it's exciting. Everyone on this team contributed this week."

CSUN will be right back on the course on Oct. 21-22 as the Matadors travel to San Jose to compete at the Santa Clara Colby Classic.
