Final Round 329 Drops Matadors to Eighth at Folino Invitational

INDUSTRY HILLS, Calif. - After putting together two solid rounds Sunday and Monday, the Cal State Northridge women's golf team struggled to a final round 329 on Tuesday to slip from fifth to an eighth-place finish at the Folino Invitational at Industry Hills Golf Club.

The Matadors, who were in sixth-place after an opening round 317, improved to fifth with a second round 311 and looked poised to post their fourth top-five finish in five tournaments of the 2011-12 season. But the final round 329, Northridge's high team round of the season, knocked the Matadors out of the top-five.

Gonzaga led from start to finish and won the team title by 13 strokes over second-place Cal State Fullerton. Long Beach State, Montana and Sacramento State rounded out the top-five in the 12-team field.

Individually for the Matadors, senior Kylie Kimura led the way with an eighth place finish which is her second top-10 finish of the season. Kimura fired a final round one over-par 72 to finish with a three round total of (+14) 227. The eighth-place finish is the best by Kimura since finishing fourth at the Firestone Grill Invitational in October.

"Kylie had one double-bogey the entire tournament which is really good," said head coach Bonnie Murphy. "She played very smart and she knows how to make birdies which really helped her today."

Margo Dionisio and Ellen Krausse were the next best Northridge finishers as the two tied for 41st at (+31) 244. Dionisio posted a final round (+16) 87 and finished with rounds of 77-80-87. Krausse, who opened the day in a tie for ninth, struggled to a final round (+19) 90 to slip to 41st. The senior wound up with rounds of 79-75-90.

Sharon Shin tied for 44th at (+32) 245 following rounds of 80-82-83 and Jennel Alexander tied for 64th at (+45) 258 after posting rounds of 89-82-87. Lady Samson competed individually and wound up in a tie for 51st at (+35) 248 following rounds of 85-81-82.

"I think we learned a lot from this tournament," added Murphy. "We did a lot of good things, everyone had their positive moments but the most important thing was that the team chemistry was really good this week. The girls really supported each other."

Cal State Northridge will next be in action Mar. 5-6 as the Matadors compete at the Bruin Wave Invitational at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana.
