Fresh off its first victory of the season, the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team packs its bags for a non-conference game against Fresno State at the Save Mart Center Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The Matadors witnessed several impressive performances in their 69-63 victory over San Jose State on Dec. 7 at The Matadome.
In defeating the Spartans, seniors Ashley Blake and Tonicia Tademy made several key plays at the end of the contest to seal the Northridge victory. Blake finished with a team-high 15 points in the win, hitting three 3-pointers and tying a career high with six rebounds and three steals. She also dished out a season-high five assists in the contest and now leading the Big West Conference with a 2.08 assist-to-turnover ratio (25/12).
Tademy coolly stepped up to the free throw line near the end of the San Jose State contest and drained a career-high five free throws to secure the win. She finished with 10 points, five rebounds and a team-high six assists.
Both guards rank among the Big West Conference's top six in assists. After leading the conference with an average of 4.1 per game in the 2007-08 season, Tademy once again finds herself atop the league standings with an average of 5.0 per game. Blake checks in at sixth with an average of 3.1 dimes per game.
The duo's success has helped Northridge to second place among all Big West teams in assists per game at 14.4.
Sophomore Analee Viena-Lota was the third Matador to reach double-figures against the Spartans, finishing with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. She is averaging 5.8 rebounds per game, the ninth-best figure in the league. She also leads Northridge with an average of 9.0 points-per-game.
Among league teams, CSUN ranks fifth in the conference by limiting its opponents to a 36.5 percent success rate from 3-point range. The Matadors also rank fifth in the Big West Conference in rebounding offense, averaging 35.5 rebounds-per-game.
Fresno State hosts Northridge Tuesday night at the Save Mart Center. The Bulldogs dropped their last game, 84-70, to Pacific in Stockton. Bailey Amundsen led the team with 17 points and eight rebounds, shooting 6-for-8 from the field. LaShay Fears added 13 points and Marnique Arnold scored 10 in the loss.
Armundson is the team's leading scorer through seven games, averaging 13.3 per contest. She is also the team's leading rebounder at 8.9 boards per game. Jaleesa Ross checks in at second on the Bulldogs at 12.7 ppg and Hayley Munro is also averaging in double-figures at 10.4 ppg. Fears leads the team in assists with 25, an average of 3.5 per game.
Adrian Wiggins in his fourth season as the head coach of the Bulldogs, having amassed a 76-38 record since his arrival. Fresno State won the last meeting, 69-58, in Northridge on Dec. 30, 2007, and owns a 13-4 record in the all-time series between the two schools.
Following the contest against Fresno State, the Matadors get 10 days off to finish their coursework for the semester. On Dec. 19, the Matadors head to Las Vegas to compete in the UNLV Desert Classic, facing tournament host UNLV at 3:30 p.m.
The next day, Northridge will take on either Oklahoma State or Southern Mississippi depending on the result of their game. Both games will be available over the air on gomatadors.com with Dave Caldwell providing play-by-play coverage.
