Matadors, Spartans to Square off in Friday Night Action

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (0-6) hosts the San Jose State Spartans (0-6) in a non-conference match-up at The Matadome Friday night. The Matadors recorded their first win in the all-time series against the Spartans last season, defeating San Jose State, 66-63, in San Jose on Nov. 17, 2006.
Senior Katie Holloway, the two-time defending Big West Sixth Woman of the Year, is Northridge's leading scorer, averaging 11.2 points in her five appearances this season. The Lake Stevens, Wash., native is also tied for the team lead in rebounding, having pulled down 38 boards this season, an average of 7.6 rebounds per game. Holloway also leads the Big West Conference in offensive rebounds with 18.
Junior Whitney Ligon, a transfer from Santa Ana Community College, is the Matadors' second-leading scorer, averaging 10.3 points-per-game. Ligon scored a season-high 20 off the bench for Northridge in its loss to Portland State and is averaging 15 ppg over her last four contests.
Another transfer, junior Tonicia Tademy, played all 80 minutes in the Matadors' Thanksgiving Weekend road trip at Portland State and Portland. Against the Pilots, Tademy scored a season-high 16 points, grabbed five rebounds and had four steals. For the season, Tademy is averaging 7.7 ppg and 5.8 rebounds-per-game, third-best on the team.
In their road trip to the City of Roses, the Matadors lost to Portland State, 91-64, and to the University of Portland, 86-65. Against Portland State, Tademy stuffed the stat sheet, finishing with six points, eight boards, six assists and three steals. Holloway was the team's second-leading scorer against the Vikings, finishing with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting and added seven rebounds. In the game against the Pilots, Ligon and Holloway scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.
San Jose State enters Friday's game having lost Tuesday night to Sacramento State, 60-57, in Sacramento. Natalie White led the team with 18 points and also had seven rebounds and five assists. White is also the Spartans' leading scorer on the season, averaging 16.2 points-per-game and pulling down 6.8 boards per contest. Brittany Powell is San Jose State's other double-figure scorer, averaging 10.2 ppg and pulling down 5.7 rebounds a game.
Pam DeCosta is in her first season as head coach of the Spartans' program, joining San Jose State after four years as the head coach of Lynn University.
The game will be a homecoming of sorts for Matadors' assistant coach Abby Vaughan, who spent the 2006-07 season with the Spartans in the same capacity under former interim head coach Greg Lockridge.
After the completion of the game Friday night, the Matadors will sign autographs for their younger fans as part of autograph night festivities.
Following the game against the Spartans, Northridge will head back out on the road to face the Lady Grizzlies of the University of Montana.
