Owls Down Matadors, 81-55, in Friday Night Action
Despite senior Katie Holloway's fourth career double-double, the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (0-4) lost to Rice (4-0), 81-55, Friday night at The Matadome. The Matadors struggled with their shooting in the second half, hitting just 8-of-38 shots (21.1 percent) from the field.
Holloway finished with season highs in both points (12) and rebounds (10). She also finished with two blocks in 28 minutes of action. Sophomore Morgan Pryor led Northridge with 13 points, matching a career high with four 3-pointers. Junior Whitney Ligon was the team's third double-digit scorer, finishing with 10 points off the bench.
The Matadors opened the game on an 8-0 run, but fell behind the Owls in the first half in part due to their 16 first-half turnovers. Despite those miscues, Northridge trailed only 43-31 at the break after hitting 13-of-24 field goals (52.4 percent) in the stanza. Ligon's eight points lead the team into the locker room.
Junior Crystal Hahs pulled down 10 rebounds in the game and added three blocks for Northridge. Junior Ashley Blake scored six points and added a team-high four assists off the bench for the Matadors.
The Matadors committed a season-high 27 turnovers, which the Owls converted into 43 points. Rice also held a 50-44 advantage on the glass and scored 23 second-chance points after pulling down 24 offensive rebounds. Rice also got to the free throw line often throughout the game, hitting 24-of-31 attempts. Conversely, the Matadors hits just 7-of-14 free throw shots.
Northridge heads back out on the road for the Thanksgiving weekend, The Matadors will place Portland State on Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. and face Portland on Nov. 25 at 2 p.m.
