Northridge Drops Season Opener at Pepperdine, 70-38

MALIBU, Calif. --- Despite forcing 24 turnovers, the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (0-1) lost to Pepperdine (1-0), 70-38, Friday night at the Firestone Fieldhouse. Junior Crystal Hahs led the Matadors with eight points and six rebounds as Northridge has now lost seven of its last eight season openers.

The Matadors trailed 37-19 at halftime after Pepperdine jumped out to a 21-6 lead to start the game. Northridge struggled with its shooting, hitting just 8-of-30 shots (26.7 percent) in the stanza.

To compound matters, the Waves were not whistled for their first foul of the game until 11:57 of the first half. However, Northridge used a 9-1 run at the end of the half to pull the game closer. Senior Katie Holloway led the team at the break with six points and three rebounds.

The Waves opened the second half on a 12-2 run to extend the lead to 49-21 with 14:33 remaining in the game. The struggles from the field continued after halftime, as the Matadors shot just 7-of-28 (25 percent) in the second half and 15-of-58 for the game (25.9 percent).

Sophomore Shanice Howard provided a spark off the bench for Northridge, recording a career-high four steals to match her four points. Freshmen Lyneeka Boyd and Bianca Davies saw the first action of their Matador careers, combining for 30 minutes and nine rebounds.

Northridge converted the 24 Pepperdine turnovers into 15 points and got 12 points from its bench. The Waves out-rebounded the Matdors, 49-34, though Norhtridge recorded 15 offensive rebounds to the Waves' 12.

The Matadors conclude their weekend with a trip down the California coast to face the University of San Diego Toreros on Sunday. Tip off is slated for 2 p.m. and the game can be heard live on gomatadors.com with Sam Farber calling all the action.

Northridge hosts cross-town rival UCLA in its home opener on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. Two nights later, the Matadors welcome Conference USA opponent Rice to The Matadome. The Matadors and Owls will play on Nov 16, also at 7 p.m.
