Northridge Opens 2007-08 Season with Pair of Road Contests
This Week's Matador Women's Basketball Release
The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team tips off its 2007-08 season with a pair of road contests, traveling to Malibu to face Pepperdine on Friday before heading south for a match-up against the University of San Diego on Sunday. This is the first time in 11 years that the Matadors will be opening their season away from The Matadome.
Heading into the season, the Matadors feature a talented combination of tested upperclassmen and an influx of youth and transfers. Senior Katie Holloway returns to anchor the post for Northridge, where the Lake Stevens, Wash., native has been a fixture for the Matadors the past three seasons. The two-time defending Big West Sixth Woman of the Year, Holloway averaged 8.3 points and 4.8 rebounds in 19 games for Northridge last season.
Joining Holloway up front is junior Crystal Hahs, a 6-4 forward who brings athleticism and versatility to the Matador line-up. Last season, Hahs averaged 2.3 points and 2.1 rebounds in 24 appearances for the Matadors. She also set a new school single-game record on Dec. 30, 2006, when she blocked seven Pacific shots.
In the backcourt, junior Ashley Blake will be counted upon to provide steady minutes at both guard positions. The Las Vegas, Nev., averaged 4.0 points and 1.5 rebounds per game in 28 appearances last season. She will be joined by a pair of transfers, Whitney Ligon and Tonicia Tademy. Ligon comes to Northridge from Santa Ana CC while Tademy arrives after two years at Mt. San Antonio. Both bring experience and leadership to a squad with six newcomers.
In its two exhibition games this year, the Matadors were tested early and often. Northridge lost to Cal Poly Pomona in overtime, 76-72, on Nov. 2. Junior Whitney Ligon, who transferred to Northridge from Santa Ana CC, scored a team-high 15 points in the defeat. Holloway posted a double-double against the Broncos, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
In their second exhibition game, the Matadors used a second-half surge to defeat The Master's College, 83-80, on Nov. 6. Blake scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting and recorded eight steals. Holloway added 18 points, including 10-of-12 from the free throw line, and six rebounds and Ligon chipped in 17 points and two steals.
Pepperdine enters the season returning all five starters from a squad that finished 14-17 last season and 6-8 in the West Coast Conference. The Waves won both of their exhibition games this year, defeating Westmont, 68-46, and Cal State Los Angeles, 90-41. Against CSULA, Daphne Kennedy scored 22 points and had seven steals while Miranda Ayim had 16 points in the victory over Westmont.
The Toreros feature a lineup that brings back eight letterwinners and three starters from last year's team that finished 21-9 and 10-4 in the West Coast Conference. San Diego won its only exhibition game of the season, defeating the Melbourne Roos, 79-55. Morgan Henderson scored a team-high 17 points in the victory while four other Toreros finished in double figures.
